Fire and Flow Arts
Consciously exploring fire and flow arts helps us overcome limiting beliefs with tangible catalysts of energetic transformation. Flow arts uses props at geometric interfaces for physical play, while fire quite literally transforms matter and adds dynamic dimension to the experience. Both practices cultivate embodiment, confidence, and creativity and connect with a supportive, like minded community.
Flow Art Theory
Technical skills teach us how to make shapes and patterns with the prop; fire adds a layer of intensity and depth to the technique and it's absolutely mesmerizing.
The practice of flow art itself can have a profound influence on your state. The shape and material of each prop carries a unique momentum that you can attune to. Once you are in a flow state, you essentially have a physical conversation with gravity. You root into the core of the earth and morph your movements with the momentum of the prop. Your breath, heartbeat, and nervous system will follow suit. The more skills you have, the deeper you can dive into union with a prop and unleash creative freedom.
Handling Fire and Fear
The fire has a lively element that brings us so potently into the present moment… that time slows down. Nothing else matters.
It's almost as if the fire is alive the way that it flickers, licks, and roars. We are instinctively drawn to its warmth and light, yet when we get too intimate, we are viscerally reminded of its tremendous transformative power.
To handle hot fire, you match its high energy with fast, fluid movements that disperses the heat throughout space. Stand upwind of the flame, and don't look down at it. Heat rises.
Remember that the anxiety of having an experience is often more painful than the experience itself. Anxiety and excitement are physiologically identical -it is up to you how you interpret and respond to the experience.
Fear is limiting only when we let it overtake our decisions. As one of the 6 core emotions, fear will always be a part of the human condition. Fire dance helps us dance with that fear with the support of community
Soul Fire Dance
Remain present, grounded and at ease. Breathe deep and allow the sound of fire and song to wash over you. Feel into the rhythm of the music, starting with large movements that arise from your heart. Feel the wind and watch it dance with the flame, using your periphery senses to be aware of your surroundings (or vice versa for performing or in groups). Let the heat electrify your energy and caress your field, or maybe even your skin. Connect with the fire into an embodied flow, makes shapes, or illuminates the contours of your body with it. Eventually you will integrate all three seamlessly.
